Donna Aldridge, international award-winning master pastelist and oil painter, fine artist, has work in collections in 25 countries and teaches painting workshops nationally and art classes in Kansas City. Water Color Painting Supplies List

COLORS

Be sure to have at least one of the following:

  • Warm (orangey / Cad. Light) Red
  • Cool (red-violet / crimson) Red
  • Warm ( orangey) Yellow
  • Cool (Lemon / Cad. Light) Yellow
  • Phthalo Green or Blue (warm blue)
  • Optional—other Cool Greens / Warm Blues
  • Ultramarine (cool blue)
  • Optional—other cool Blue / Violet
  • Optional—Earth Tones
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Raw Sienna
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Raw Umber
    • Burnt Umber
  • Any other Colors you wish



• Avoid using student grades of paint. They are cheap because they are full of filler and often lower-standard pigments.They behave differently in use because of this. The colors will also tend to sparkle and vibrate less that the fine grades. You can save a dollar here and there and loose painting after painting. Not a very economical exchange. There are strategies for using fine materials and still being thrifty. Call. We'll talk!

• Avoid pigments labeled as light resistant. They may resist fading for a few weeks or months, but they will not hold FAST to their intended color!

• Always use Light Fast Colors!


BRUSHES

Minimum:

  • #6 watercolor brush of the
    best quality you can manage
  • 1-inch wide flat brush

Useful:

  • #1 or #2 detail brush
  • large 'mop' brush

Bring any other Brushes you wish




    • When investing in water color brushes with limited funds, you might consider buying a far better #6 sable brush and save money on a less expensive large wash brush, waiting to add any other brushes till later.

    ADDITIONAL MATERIALS Additional materials welcome
    • 2 or more sheets of 140 lb. (or heavier) watercolor papers approx.18" x 24"
    • or water color block 16" x 20" or larger
    • varnished plywood board or other board for paper, preferably more than one
    • brown tape, staples or other material to fix paper to board for stretching
    • large sponge
    • large container for water
    • paper towels—any brand (Bounty Select-a-Size Plain—personal favorite)
    • 2-H lead pencil or other drawing material
    • optional—liquid frisket and brush, solvent.
    • optional—Colourshapers, knife, other tools
    • optional—viewfinder
    • notebook and pen/pencil since there are times when you want to make notes!
